Balinda is a wonderful and vibrant individual, who is both ideal to work with, and as I would argue, the most adept option for childcare and caregiving. I worked with Balinda over this last summer at Stony Creek Childcare Center in Milan. Initially, when first working with her, I was intimidated by the powerhouse she is. She is entirely approachable and eager to help. She has years of experience loving children and fostering their growth. One moment that sticks out to me was when, upon us noticing one of the children in our class (age 5) was writing their name backwards, she eagerly huddled the class around to show them her backwards cursive in the mirror, and showed them how to write their own names backwards. She knows how to play on the children’s interests and strengths to create a positive learning space. She’s personally helped me navigate how to better help children with behavioral issues and conflicts between kids. Another moment that comes to mind— at our center, there was a trail behind the building we could take the kids on, and she advocated to take the children out to learn on it whenever possible. Kids would come up to me to tell me what the plant they were holding was, or what the bug they had captured in their bucket was. “Woah, where did you learn that?” I would already know their answer. “Mrs. Z found it with me.” She is exceedingly patient and creative, and is always looking to find a new thing of interest with kids! Balinda is seriously my first pick for childcare!!
