I began caring for my mom, Marlene, in Jan 2020 after my dad passed. They had been married for 61 years. It took some convincing but she agreed to move from Florida to live with me in my NYC studio along with my dog Ellie, cat Jessie and her 12-year-old yorkie, Bindy. Caring for my mom in this capacity was not something I had planned and I learned by simply doing. The pandemic happened 3 months after she arrived. I began to work from home full time. It was very difficult to care for mom and work. After about 6 months of this I hired a caregiver from care. com. It took a few candidates but I finally found 2 caregivers that my mom adored and they took wonderful care of her. Mom had Lewy Body Dementia and was no longer able to walk. She could transfer with help. The caregivers were with us 9-5 Mon-Sat. Any other time it was just me and mom. It was a joyful and difficult 5 years but I would not take back a second. Mom passed in Dec 2024. It was a blessing and honor to care for my mom.
