Personalized support and individual assessment. In my 30 years of teaching/tutoring, it all comes down to these elements. One of my younger students, came to me with low self-confidence, had failed every test under the sun, and was put back 2 grades. After 4 weeks of 2 sessions weekly, he skipped 2 grades and aced his AP exams. In college , I struggled with low self-esteem and a lack of confidence, too. I was shocked to be designated Summa Cum Laude and a 4. 0 GPA. I fulfilled my major, Spanish, and decided never to believe anyone who said I could not do something. I became a professional interpreter, and my interest in the English language have blessed me with several years as a reporter at The New York Times.
