When I was younger, I was a live-in caregiver to a prominent, retired academic couple. For most of the past seven years, I was a caregiver to my elderly parents, first my mother who died in her late 80s and my father who died recently in his late 90s. I gave them the support they needed to live fully and with relative independence, even as they faced increasingly serious health problems that would otherwise have been only manageable in a medically supervised facility. In the process, I worked closely with doctors, social workers, physical and occupational therapists and other caregivers. I also provided companionship in activities ranging from creative pursuits, outdoor adventures, playing games, learning or improving skills, and good conversation. Upon my father's passing, I took an early retirement and now have time to share all I have learned helping my parents - and their friends, neighbors and relatives - to provide companionship and support to others in need of care.
