My caregiving experience really starts 18 years ago when I went to school to become a caregiver. I learned that I loved taking care of seniors. I was a few days away from taking the certification test when my husband had to accept a job overseas. Fast forward 18 years, I became a stay at home mom to 4 beautiful children and have a lot of experience managing a home and children, and more recently over the last 2 years I took care of my 80-year-old aunt in Chicago who had dementia and Parkinson's. She passed away a year ago. I did all the caregiver duties as well as learn a lot about caring for someone with dementia, Parkinson's, and in the end, hospice. While I don't have formal certification, I have a lot of hands on training and something even more valuable; a heart for the elderly and a passion to care with love and compassion. That is something no amount of formal training can give you.
