I connected with Meghan through Care.com and initially appreciated her warmth and the idea of our children spending time together. However, several red flags quickly emerged, and I ultimately decided not to move forward — all within just a few days. She initially quoted a rate of $25/hour, which she increased to $30/hour shortly after I asked for a phone reference — a basic and standard step in any caregiver screening process. I also asked if I could speak with someone she currently tutors, a past nanny family, or even a director from one of the schools she had worked at. She was hesitant and said she only provides that information to long-term families — despite us discussing ongoing care throughout the year. She added that the school director was no longer available and did not offer any alternatives. She declined to share a resume and gave inconsistent answers about her work history and current availability. At times she said she was staying home with her son, while also stating she had current clients but hadn’t been asked for references in a long time. She canceled our first scheduled session just one hour before it was meant to start. When I informed her that I wouldn’t be moving forward, she sent a passive-aggressive message implying I had been unfair and caused her to lose clients — despite the fact that we had only met once and had no confirmed commitment beyond that one canceled visit. Her tone throughout shifted from warm and overly flattering (including copy-pasted praise) to defensive and emotionally charged when I asked reasonable questions or set basic boundaries. While she may have experience, I did not find her communication or conduct to be consistent, professional, or grounded. Families who prioritize trust, clarity, and respectful two-way dialogue may want to proceed with caution.
