I helped a family care for a 57-year-old gentleman in his last 8 months of his life. John had a very rare, neurodegenerative disease (CBD) called corticobasal degeneration. It was progressive and devastating where the family slowly lost their husband and father over many years. We spent time taking walks, listening to music, dance a bit, go on drives to sit by the ocean and get ice cream. We'd talk, sing and whistle, rest and have dinner. We connected in a very short time and I just tried to bring joy into John's life so the family could have some much deserved rest. ************** I've also helped take care of an older woman who was in the beginning stages of dementia. She was lonely and I mostly spent time taking her on errands and to doctor's appointments, bringing fun and laughter into our day with dance or exercise or going to the beach. I would help her organize for a trip and some laundry.
