About Britt

I help children learn to love to read/write by providing activities based on their needs and interests. I read to them to develop their love of stories. I help them choose books they can read on their own or with help. I transcribe stories the children tell to me so they can see their ideas as written words and become excited about creating something like that themselves. We'll practice pre-writing activities like drawing, painting and other fine/ gross motor skills, when those seem to need more development. My approach is not based on forcing children to practice penmanship, spelling and reading, but rather to help them discover their own intrinsic motivation for reading, writing and spelling through activities like reading/writing recipes, creating signs as part of imaginary play (like a "do not enter" sign for a dragon on a real pillow-fort castle), and making up their own stories.
