Hi! I am a post doctoral student, with some time and I would like to work with people. I am an older caregiver (43.) I am an only child and recently took care of my mom full time after a very dangerous open heart surgery for 4 months. I nursed her back to health (she is a fighter) but needed to help bathe, help with medicines (the list is a page long), doctors appointments, shopping etc. Just being there and talking with my mom was important. Now she is better and can drive and go out herself! I had experience because I took care of my grandmother many, many weeks over a 5 year period while I was in college--and I am so glad I did. My cousins asked me why I knew grandma so well and her history--well it was because I sat and talked with her, cooked her simple dinners and helped her with her medications, etc. I enjoyed being with her, and sometimes her friends would come over. I think you just need to be compassionate, and be able to listen when people are older--it gets you so far.
