At age 12, I began private instruction with Atlantic Recording artist Randy Jackson of the band “Zebra”. From there, I taught local children in my mother’s living room. Initially, I had two students and within 3 months had 10-20. In 1987, my band “Fahrenheit” opened and toured with such bands as Zebra, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Cheap Trick, Heart, and Boston. Fahrenheit was a top drawing regional act and was signed with Atlantic records for a short time. Fahrenheit played hundreds of shows across the country before disbanding in 1991. In 1991, I was accepted to MIT and graduated a year later. After which, I was asked to continue as an instructor for MIT in their “Summer Session” program and did so for three years. These classes consisted of upwards of 20-40 students. While at MIT, I was fortunate to learn from and play with such great artists as Eddie Van Halen, Vernon Reid, Alan Holdsworth, Prince, Paul Gilbert, George Lynch, Neal Schon, Steve Lukather, Jimmy Page, Steve Morse and Nile Rogers among others. While in LA I also worked on numerous studio projects. In 1994, I began giving private lessons from my home in New Orleans and within a few weeks accumulated more students than I thought I could properly teach. So to ensure quality instruction, I limited myself to 30 students. Some of my students have gone on to tour with bands such as Lillian Axe, Quiet Riot, Don Dokken and Bullet Boys. 2004 - I was chosen by Guitar Player magazine to record six songs on a Van Halen tribute CD released by Metal Blade records. I have designed my own instruction program. I begin with the basic guitar fundamentals and depending on the student’s ability we can eventually move onto advanced theory, concepts and technique. My preference is to teach beginner to intermediate students “rock” guitar ( Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Jimmy Page, Steve Vai, etc). It’s my preferred music style and I’ve found that most beginning students enjoy learning it. I keep my lessons fun, interesting and flexible to the individual wants and desires of the student. I graduated from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, FL with a B.M. in Percussion Performance. While completing my bachelor’s degree, I worked with high school and middle school music programs in the area as well as around the state. After relocating to the Tampa bay, I’ve assisted Burns Middle School, Adams Middle School, Chamberlain High School, Barrington Middle School, and Memorial Middle School with developing fundamentals of technique in a fun, judgement-free environment. With over 10+ years of performing and teaching experience, I have developed a strong method to make learning percussion technique simple and fun! With MPA, solo ensemble, concerts, and auditions right around the corner, my goal is to assist in shaping the talented young minds in your ensemble and help build well-rounded, prepared percussionist. I range from jazz, funk, rock, hip-hop, trap, rb, fusion, pop, blues, latin (afro-cuban,brazilian,etc), drum n bass, neo-soul, indie, metal. I think you get the point. I'm a music aficionado. If you're looking to learn more technical things I have some licks up my sleeves, and other things such as multi limb independence/coordination excercises, and also poly-rythmic, metric modulation/beat displacement ideas, odd time signature grooves. All the this stuff is awesome from a drummers perspective, but it's about how we apply it. And remember "Fills bring thrills, but pocket pays bills" lol. Therefore, if you're interested in taking your playing past a plateau we can achieve it together. Formal Education: I find myself still learning every day from every person I counter. I learn by teaching and I teach by learning. Private Education: I was accepted at Berklee College of Music but I didn't attend due to the cost so I continued to excel at my craft here. Performing Experience: I have played drums in live settings with audiences of all different demographics for the past 15 years. Experience Teaching: I have helped many individuals reach their drumming goals over the past years. It is the most rewarding thing to see a person progress in something they like and to know I provided my help and knowledge in doing so. I have a systematic approach to my syllabus designed to focus on areas in drumming which could use improvement while strengthening already developed areas.
